Microsoft seems relentless in their drive to convert everyone to Vista. They have begun phasing out OEM shipments of XP completely to push Vista.
The effect : 5 KD earnings for pirated vendors in Hawalli* who promise to install XP onto existing Vista-shipped laptops & Desktops.
Here’s my two cents on the matter. People are either going to :
- maintain their versions of XP. Assuming they can no longer get their hands on it, they’ll simply maintain pirated copies.
- move to Linux. OSs like Ubuntu seem extremely promising. Not only are they focusing on user friendliness(Linux’s primary disadvantage in comparison to Windows), they are working hard to release compatible drivers(the secondary concern in moving to Linux).
- ditch their PC for a Mac. Not only do apple products look irresistibly sexy, they kick ASS!The increasing number of converts, my case in point. (I think it has more to do with the apple status symbol. In fact I’m seriously considering IT. But that’s cause I’m a sucker for anything apple).
- if it means moving to Vista
Besides, its interesting to note Windows’ track record. Almost every alternate release of Windows has turned out to be a flop. We had Win 3.1 which was huge –> then came Win 95 eliciting a unanimous raise of the middle finger –> followed by Win 98 which Microsoft themselves gave up on –> then came in the relatively more stable Win 2000 –> then came Win Me, you guys remember that, i think it was just an excuse to mark the occasion of completing the second Millennium –> then came Microsoft XP IMHO the most stable version of windows to-date : and if left-alone my best preference for an OS today –> After 7 unexpectedly long successful years windows comes out with the now infamous Vista.
My predictions :-
Vista despite the push from Microsoft will not achieve XP’s success.Windows 7 comes out , ppl again not too comfy with it. Microsoft then bring out something, which by then if the PC still exists, people warm upto.
*Hawalli in Kuwait = Richy street in Chennai = The place where you go to buy/assemble your computer OEM components real cheap
